The rains finally gave way to racing at Texas Motor Speedway, as the rain-delayed Duck Commander 500 finally took the green and checkered flags on Monday. With the green-white-checkered finale, Joey Logano became the seventh different winner in the first seven races of the 2014 Sprint Cup Series season, beating Jeff Gordon on the white flag lap for the fourth win of his career.
Logano started 10th on the field when the green flag finally flew on Monday and led three times for a race-high 108 laps. The G-W-C finale, brought out when Kurt Busch hit the wall, brought the front-runners in for tires, with Gordon and Brian Vickers electing to take just two as opposed to the four tires the rest of the front-runners took. Logano, on four fresh tires, took the lead from Gordon just after the white flag flew.
“I feel very fortunate to finish second,” said Gordon post-race. “Joey was the class of the field there the second half of the race. I knew it was going to be hard to hold those guys off.”
“When you got like 40 something laps after the last pit stop, you got a pretty sizable lead, really all you're thinking is, Where is the white flag? Where is the white flag?” said Logano. “Brad was able to catch us a little bit. Then you go into turn one, you see the 41 up against the wall. You're like, Please no caution, please no caution. Boom, it comes out. You got to be kidding me. You get so mad you barely can control yourself - at least for me. I had to make sure I stayed calm and tried to give Todd the information I needed to, then he had to make the right call.”
Kyle Busch came home third, followed by Vickers and Kyle Larson. Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer, Paul Menard and Tony Stewart rounded out the top 10.
The Sprint Cup Series races at Darlington Speedway, the “Track Too Tough to Tame,” on Saturday night, April 12th. Keep up with the action at www.nascar.com.
