Matt Garza has signed a four-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. This makes him the first big-name MLB free agent to sign since the Masahiro Tanaka deal was announced. According to a report from CBS Sports on Thursday (Jan. 23), the Brewers have extended a four-year, million deal to Garza. This move might surprise some fans of the team, because the franchise hasn't been linked to many free agents this offseason.

Seven Player Trade Goes Down

Garza now becomes part of a rotation that will also likely include Yovani Gallardo, Kyle Lohse, Marco Estrada, and Wily Peralta for the 2014 MLB season. On paper it is a pretty good one, with Garza ready to provide a lot of innings to the team. He split last season between the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers, making 24 starts after returning from an injury. He finished with a 10-6 record, a 3.82 ERA, and 136 strikeouts in 155 1/3 innings of work.

The deal will become official when the Milwaukee Brewers complete his physical, but it looks like Matt Garza is going to be the latest player to come off the free agent board. He doesn't have any draft compensation attached to him, so the Brewers also don't have to worry about dropping in the order this summer. As a pitcher already familiar with the National League Central, he will have a lot of expectations placed upon him by a franchise that is trying hard to turn things around in 2014.
