Scranton Prep offensive lineman Joe Holmes will accept a spot as a preferred walk-on at Penn State next fall, . Holmes, a 5-11, 255-pound two-way player, will join teammate Noah Beh on campus.

Beh, a three-star offensive tackle in the 2014 recruiting class, already. He also played a part in Holmes earning a walk-on spot, according to the Times-Tribune report.

While coach James Franklin continues to assemble nationally ranked recruiting classes, he still faces a numbers crunch as the program recovers from crippling sanctions the NCAA imposed before the 2012 season. Franklin has a full allotment of 25 scholarships to offer in the 2015 recruiting class, but he still must meet an overall limit of 80 scholarships.

Penn State will be back at full force with 25 initial and 85 overall scholarships for the 2016 season. There will be depth issues to address between now and then, likely beyond, as the program continues to restore talent and numbers lost through sanctions.

Franklin has made a priority of addressing the offensive line through his recruiting efforts. The Nittany Lions are thin on proven players, particularly at the tackle positions, but have three 14 recruits bolstering depth and verbal commitments from four-star prospects Ryan Bates and Steven Gonzalez in the 15 class.

Though undersized, Holmes can round out the depth chart and play on scout teams. In exchange, he gets to follow a dream to play at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and pursue a possible scholarship later in his career.
