tory burch ella tote South Alabama head coach Joey Jones comments after a spring football practice Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in Mobile, Ala. (Mike Kittrell/mkittrell@al.com) - is closing out its 2014spring practice. The Jaguars, in shorts and helmets, went through the 13thof 15 allowed practice days Wednesday morning, working on situations, some7-on-7 drills and position work. The session lasted less than the usually twohours of past practices.

Still, head coach said he was pleased with whatwas accomplished.

"We had to have three days of shorts in the spring,'' Jonessaid. "We took one earlier and we'll have another one Friday, then comebackwith a scrimmage on Saturday. It was a good. It was good tempo. They were kindof running around pretty good with shorts on. They were kind of relieved theydidn't have to bang on one another. But it was a good day, a good mental workday.''

Jones said his team handled the switch to shorts and helmetswell and probably welcomed the change.

"I think they were glad they were out of pads, to be honestwith you,'' he said. "They did work well. We told them it was going to be amental day, it was not going to be a physical day, it was something different,I think. They responded really well.''

Jones added, "We've made progress in a lot of areas, butthere's still areas we've got to make progress in. I think right now if youlook at the kicking game, our punters need to put the ball better. We've got tofind a guy who's going to be our guy there. Our field goal game is going prettywell and I'm pleased with that.

"We did do a little work with our kickoff team, probably notas much as we needed to, but we did get some work on the kickoff team, a lot offundamental work. We've got to put that together. But overall with the specialteams I'm pretty pleased. Offensively and defensively, I'm just telling them,'Look, let's get a little better every day; that's all you can do. If you'regoing to be great you've got to keep taking those steps.' I think we've donethat. We've got a couple more days to finish up strong.''

The Jags have two more practice sessions, one scheduledFriday morning and a scrimmage on Saturday that will feature players whohaven't received as many reps during the spring as the players on the toprotations. Friday's practice will be devoted in part to taking an early look atsome of the 2014 opponents and what they do.

"There's a couple of opponents that we're going to pick outto work on,'' Jones said. "I like to do that while we have some time. Obviouslywe won't have them (players) again until August - they'll do work on their own,but right now we're trying to get some work done and get a feel for some of ouropponents next fall.''

Jones said while the spring session is winding down, thereis still work to be put in and for some players, the final two practices areimportant.

"It's not over certainly. Your job is on the line everyday,'' Jones said. "But, what they're playing for now is a chance to get a lotof reps in the fall. You start working ones and twos and maybe some threes, those guys are going to get the work, so these guys are fighting for thosespots right now.''
