Gearbox Software confirmed on Wednesday that a new Borderlands game is releasing on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC later this fall. The catch is that the series’ next entry, entitled Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, will be developed by 2K Australia. This will make this year’s new Borderlands release the first game in the franchise that won’t be solely developed by Gearbox Software.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set to take place on the moon base that orbits Pandora during the time period between Borderlands and Borderlands 2 and will put players in control of four all-new playable characters. Rather than seeking the fame and fortune that associated with being a vault hunter, this fall’s release will have players helping Borderlands 2 antagonist Handsome Jack take over the Hyperion corporation which will fill in some of the series’ back story.
As for the four new playable characters themselves, a report by Kotaku on April 9 revealed all of the new classes as well as detailed some of their new abilities. Making a few more firsts in the franchise, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be the first game to not include a Siren as an available class as well as feature the first non-human playable character. It’s also of interest to point out that all four of the characters have appeared in previous Borderlands games.
The first character is Athena the Gladiator, who was first revealed to players in the General Knoxx DLC from the first Borderlands game. Athena’s action skill revolves around the use of a hand-held shield, hence why she bears the class title of “The Gladiator.” Using her physical shield, Athena is able to block incoming attacks and then redirect the damage back to its source by throwing the shield.
Next up is Wilhelm the Enforcer. Fans may remember Wilhelm as the mostly-robotic Hyperion boss from Borderlands 2. Wilhelm’s action skill is still a secret but it has been confirmed that he will start out fully human but will be upgraded with numerous robotic parts as players level.
Not much is known regarding the in-game abilities of the final two characters, but their identity has been revealed. The first is Nisha the Lawbringer who served as the sheriff of Lynchwood in Borderlands 2. Rounding out the team, however, is a treat that might surprise fans. The fourth and final playable character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is the non other than Claptrap himself.
Each of the character classes will have their own skill trees just as fans are familiar with from past entries of the franchise. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will release this fall on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC from developer 2K Australia. The game won’t be heading to either the Xbox One or PS4.
