true religion beanie Alabama's C.J. Harris on 'American Idol': Top 8 Redux performance recap, with video and poll C.J. Harris of Jasper remains in the running on Season 13 of American Idol. He's among the top eight finalists on the Fox reality series. (Fox photo) and established a mutual admiration society on tonight's episode of ." Cook -- who took the "Idol" crown in 2008 -- returned to his old stomping grounds as a mentor. His job: to help the top eight finalists navigate a 1980s theme week.Harris, 23, needed guidance with his arrangement for Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'." After a rehearsal session or two, both men were left singing each other's praises."C.J. really, really impressed me with his song this week," Cook said. "I've heard 'Free Fallin' more times than I would ever care to mention. His rendition got me excited about that song again, which is great."Harris, in turn, lauded Cook's abilities and attitude on the."He really helped me out a lot. He really got deep in helping me with my music, so it meant a lot to me," Harris said. "He's an awesome dude."Harris, a country-soul singer from Jasper, is one of three Alabamians left on the show during Season 13. Here's the latest on his progress, as seen on the 7 p.m. performance episode. This week's theme:Producers returned to a time-honored concept on the show: '80s night. Leg warners! Neon headbands! Rubber bracelets! Producers pushed the retro visuals, and photographed contestants in period gear for their "vote for me at this number" shots. What he sang:"Free Fallin'" by . It's the lead-off track on Petty's 1989 solo album, "Full Moon Fever." The song earned radio fame and became a signature anthem for Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers. What Harris said:The "Idol" judges understand his earthy approach to music, and he appreciates it. "That's what I'm all about touching hearts and communicating," Harris said. What the judges said:A familiar refrain from all three: Harris oozes heart and soul, but his pitch remains wobbly Week after week, they advise him to work on proper intonation. Week after week, they offer staunch encouragement. "It started off a little bit shaky, but by the end You have the ability, that maybe some of the other contestants struggle with, which is to touch people's hearts. And you do that," said Jennifer Lopez. Harry Connick Jr. agreed -- "you have an incredible gift" -- but pointed to problems with the low notes. "You've got a survivor tone in your voice," Keith Urban said. "It's like, 'You may do this to me, you may do that to me, but I am going to prevail. I am going to survive.' That's the bit I love, that optimism."Critical reaction:Cool take on the Petty anthem, loaded with gravity and pathos. It's easy to root for nice guy Harris, who seems devoted to music and determined to forge a professional career. That's the plus side. On the minus side: Harris' vocals were pancake-flat for a significant portion of the song. To advance on "Idol," he simply has to tame those pitch demons.Bonus: The finalists paired off for mix-and-match duets this week. Harris teamed with Malaya Watson for a cover of "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)." In 1987, this tune became an AC radio juggernaut for Aretha Franklin and George Michael. The "Idol" version paled in comparison, but Harris and Watson connected, collaborated and seemed to enjoy each other on stage. Pleasant and upbeat.By the numbers:Finalist Sam Woolf faced elimination last week, but earned the judges' save, making tonight's performances the Top Eight Redux. What's next: for their favorites in several ways, including a new method linked to Google searches. One singer will be eliminated on the April 10 episode, which airs at 8 p.m. CST.
